ASIATODAY.ID, MANILA — ASEAN and New Zealand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional stability and resilience as growing geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and disruptions to global trade routes pose new challenges across the Indo-Pacific.
Meeting in Manila on 22 July 2026 under the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship, ASEAN Member States and New Zealand issued a Joint Statement emphasizing the importance of ASEAN centrality, international law, and stronger regional cooperation to safeguard peace, security, and prosperity.
The partnership comes amid a period of heightened global uncertainty, with conflicts, strategic competition, and pressure on critical maritime routes affecting energy markets, food security, and global supply chains.
ASEAN and New Zealand stressed that ASEAN-led mechanisms, including the East Asia Summit (EAS), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus), and Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum (EAMF), remain essential platforms for dialogue and conflict prevention.
The two sides reaffirmed the importance of peaceful dispute resolution, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Safeguarding Maritime Trade Routes
ASEAN and New Zealand highlighted the critical importance of maintaining open and secure sea lanes to ensure the uninterrupted movement of energy resources, food products, medicines, and essential goods.
They expressed concern over any measures that could restrict international navigation, particularly in strategic waterways vital to global commerce.
The commitment carries wider significance for the Indo-Pacific, where maritime security challenges continue to shape regional dynamics, including concerns surrounding contested waters and increasing strategic competition.
Strengthening Energy and Food Security
Beyond security cooperation, ASEAN and New Zealand agreed to accelerate collaboration in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable supply chains, and regional connectivity.
The partnership will be advanced through the ASEAN–New Zealand Plan of Action 2026–2030, supporting projects under the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
Priority areas include clean energy transition, cross-border electricity cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid, resilient food systems, sustainable fisheries, and the development of a blue economy.
The newly launched ASEAN–New Zealand Vision Fund will further support initiatives aimed at building long-term regional resilience.
ASEAN’s Strategic Role in a Changing World
The joint statement underscores ASEAN’s growing role as a stabilizing force amid a rapidly changing global environment.
By reinforcing cooperation with New Zealand, ASEAN seeks to strengthen a rules-based regional order, protect economic stability, and enhance collective resilience against emerging challenges.
As geopolitical pressures rise across the Indo-Pacific and beyond, ASEAN–New Zealand cooperation represents a renewed commitment to maintaining peace, openness, and shared prosperity. (AT Network)
