ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Prosecutors throughout Southeast Asia held the 2nd Consultation Meeting in Bali to form a special entity as a forum for optimizing the professionalism of prosecutors in the region in enforcing fair laws.
“With the formation of an ASEAN Prosecutor’s entity, it is hoped that it will be able to assist in cross-border law enforcement, including in dealing with transnational crimes such as human trafficking, narcotics, money laundering, corruption and other crimes,” said Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin at the meeting, quoted in a press statement on Information Law Attorney General in Jakarta, Friday, April 26 2024.
Burhanuddin explained that the initiative to form an entity for ASEAN prosecutors began about a year after the first consultation meeting held in Lam Thaen, Thailand produced an important point, namely the need to strengthen cooperation between prosecutors throughout ASEAN.
“This is a form of optimizing the role played by ASEAN Prosecutors in preventing and suppressing organized transnational crime, as well as encouraging ASEAN Prosecutors to discuss and share experiences related to Prosecutor’s activities in order to strengthen the ASEAN Prosecutor’s network,” said Burhanuddin.
At the ASEAN Prosecutor’s consultation meeting in Bang Saen, said Burhanuddin, an agreement had been reached on the “Bang Saen Initiative 2023”. This agreement essentially opens up opportunities to explore the formation of an entity or body for Prosecutors throughout ASEAN along with its organizational format and function as a forum for increasing cooperation including a means of sharing information and knowledge related to law enforcement in order to maintain the supremacy of law in the ASEAN region.
According to him, the urgency to form a forum for cooperation between prosecutorial institutions in the ASEAN region is very necessary because in the context of globalization and technological developments, cross-border crimes are now increasingly complex and difficult to handle by one country alone.
Burhanuddin hopes that the existence of ASEAN Prosecutors can increase collaboration and synergy between ASEAN prosecutors in order to build a strong and effective law enforcement system.
Apart from that, with the existence of this entity, he continued, it is hoped that it can also increase the capacity and competence of prosecutors in handling various cases that require cross-border cooperation, the need to gain access to information, and expand the network of prosecutors in ASEAN regional countries.
On this occasion, Burhanuddin invited ASEAN Prosecutors to commit together to make the 2nd Consultation Meeting forum for ASEAN Prosecutors in Bali as a step to strengthen synergy and joint coordination.
“Let’s send a strong message to criminals that law enforcement efforts must not be defeated by differences in legal systems and jurisdictions, considering that current globalization has given impetus to the transformation of crimes from sectoral to multi-sectoral,” said Burhanuddin.
The 2nd Consultation Meeting to form a body or entity for ASEAN Prosecutors in Bali was also attended by the Attorney General of the Philippines, His Excellency Mr. Benedicto Malcotento, Deputy Attorney General of Thailand, His Excellency Mr. Jumphon Phansumrit, Head of the Asset Recovery Agency and General Chair of the Indonesian Prosecutors Association, Attorney General Young Intelligence Officer, Expert Staff of the Attorney General for Economic, Social and Cultural Affairs, Chairs and Members of the Attorney General’s Delegation from Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar, Observers from Japan, Luxembourg, the United States , Denmark and UNODC.
