Australian PM Welcomes Indonesia’s Elected President Prabowo Subianto

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Australian Prime Minister (PM) Anthony Albanese and Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles enthusiastically welcomed the arrival of the President-elect of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto in Australia who will discuss the continuation of a number of collaborations between the two countries.

“Indonesia and Australia are the closest partners and I welcome the opportunity to meet with President-elect Prabowo ahead of his inauguration in October,” said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in an official statement received in Jakarta, Monday, August 19 2024.

The visit, which took place on 19-20 August, was Prabowo’s first visit to Australia since the Indonesian election in February 2024. PM Albanese and Deputy PM Marles will welcome President-elect Prabowo in Canberra and will discuss Australia’s ongoing commitment to cooperation in partnership with Indonesia in the areas of economy, security and the transition to zero carbon emissions which are shared priorities.

“Our government is committed to cooperation with Indonesia to build the region we want, a region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous, and respects sovereignty,” said Albanese.

Meanwhile, Deputy PM Marles said that he was happy because he had had the opportunity to work with and get to know President-elect Prabowo while serving as Minister of Defense and had made great strides in defense cooperation between the two countries.

Indonesia is one of Australia’s closest partners and this year the two countries celebrate 75 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.

“Australia and Indonesia are working together more closely than ever before and expanding the scope and complexity of our joint military exercises, as we address shared regional challenges,” he said. (AT Network)
