ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) with a majority vote, on Wednesday, September 18 2024, succeeded in adopting a resolution calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories within one year and the implementation of sanctions if Israel does not comply.
Responding to this, the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, urged the international community to immediately formulate concrete steps to respond to the latest UNGA resolution.
“This UNGA resolution is very historic and positive and must be appreciated. However, what is much more important is how to ensure that this resolution can be implemented. In the next year, we want to see Israel forced to withdraw from the West Bank, Gaza, and demolish various illegal settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem. “We, Indonesia, urge the international community, especially the UN, to formulate concrete steps related to this resolution,” said Fadli in a written statement in Jakarta, Friday, September 20 2024.
According to Fadli, these concrete steps are very crucial because the UNGA resolution itself is not binding.
“Security Council resolutions alone are binding in many cases and are difficult to implement, let alone UNGA resolutions which are not binding. “We must not let UN resolutions agreed to by the majority of its members become empty messages,” he stressed.
Even though the UNGA resolution is not binding, the Vice President of the Global Parliamentary League for Palestine believes that the latest UNGA resolution has succeeded in sending many messages.
“First, the world is deeply disgusted by Israel’s barbarism that has lasted for more than seven decades, including the genocide in the Gaza Strip which killed more than 41,000 Palestinians,” said the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
Second, the majority of the world has realized that the root of the problem of the Palestinian and Israeli conflict is Israeli colonialism which gave birth to injustice, apartheid, and the expulsion and massacre of Palestinians.
Third, Israel has begun to be abandoned by its allies in the West.
“Israel’s allies in the West have begun to straighten out and realize their mistakes. Except of course the US. The latest UNGA resolution succeeded in mapping world support for Palestine. Of the fourteen that rejected the resolution, the majority were small countries, especially in the Pacific. It is also important to note, of the five countries that have veto rights, only one country stands up to defend Israel, namely the US. “This is a great opportunity for how in the future the UNGA resolution can be adopted by the UN Security Council,” stressed Fadli.
