ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Rising military tensions between India and Pakistan have drawn serious international concern.
In response, the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has called for an immediate halt to military actions and urged both nations to seek a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels.
The recent escalation follows a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists. The militant group The Resistance Front, based in Pakistan, claimed responsibility. Although the Pakistani government denied any involvement, India condemned the incident as cross-border terrorism, launching a military response known as Operation Sindoor.
Chairman of BKSAP Mardani Ali Sera, expressed deep concern, noting that the conflict between two nuclear-armed states poses a serious threat to both regional and global stability.
“We support the statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, which calls on both parties to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic dialogue,” said Mardani, May 8, 2025.
In its official statement, BKSAP DPR RI emphasized four strategic steps to help de-escalate the India-Pakistan conflict:
1. Protection of Civilians: Both nations must ensure the safety of civilians and safeguard vital infrastructure, including humanitarian projects.
2. Multilateral Support: BKSAP supports peace initiatives through multilateral forums such as the UN, ASEAN, and AIPA to facilitate mediation.
3. Cessation of Military Actions: Immediate ceasefire and an end to provocative actions are imperative.
4. Resolution of the Kashmir Dispute: A comprehensive settlement is needed, based on the UN Charter and international law.
Parliamentary Diplomacy for Peace in South Asia
Mardani further stated that BKSAP is ready to actively engage in parliamentary diplomacy through collaboration with AIPA and the SAARC Parliamentary Assembly, to promote long-term peace.
“We invite the international community, including parliaments around the world, to join forces in promoting the de-escalation of the India-Pakistan conflict and to contribute to building a more stable and peaceful South Asian region,” he concluded. (AT Network)
