ASIATODAY.ID, ABU DHABI – The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of Cooperation in the Field of Meteorology and Geophysics with the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The signing of the MoU was carried out by the Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati and the Director General of NCM, Abdulla Al Mandous at the NCM Abu Dhabi office, on November 29 2023.
Areas of cooperation between the two parties include early warning systems, weather modification, human resource development, as well as consultations for commercial services related to meteorology and geophysics and various other collaborations.
“A new area of cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE has been opened with the signing of an MoU on Cooperation in the fields of Climatology and Geophysics. With this MoU, I hope that Indonesia and the UAE can exchange experiences and experts in the fields of climatology and geophysics. The signing of this MoU also takes the momentum of COP28 which was held in the UAE, where BMKG and NCM are parties that also support or are involved in issues of climate change and sustainability,” said the Indonesian Ambassador to the UAE, Husin Bagis in a written statement quoted on Sunday, December 3 2023.
Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati explained that Indonesia’s position in the ring of fire, facing various risks of fire and tsunami, necessitated the need for BMKG’s role in a stronger Early Warning System.
Not only that, with Indonesia’s different natural conditions in each region, there are various challenges on the socio-economic side. Therefore, collaboration with various parties including the UAE NCM is one step for BMKG to further strengthen this role through sharing experiences, increasing human resource capacity and various collaborations in the fields of meteorology and geophysics.
The MoU on Cooperation in the Field of Meteorology and Geophysics was previously discussed by both parties since August 2023 and was finalized in November 2023 taking the momentum of COP28. (AT Network)
