ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a tsunami warning for five regions in Indonesia following a powerful 7.4-magnitude tectonic earthquake that struck the Philippine Sea on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, stated that the agency’s modeling results indicate a potential tsunami threat with a “Watch” (Waspada) level for several regions.
“The modeling shows that this earthquake has the potential to generate a tsunami, with a Watch level of threat for Kepulauan Talaud, Bitung City, South Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa Utara, and Supiori,” Daryono said in an official statement on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Tremors Felt in North Sulawesi
Strong tremors were reported in Tahuna, recorded at Intensity IV MMI, meaning the quake was felt by many people indoors. In Manado, shaking reached Intensity II MMI, causing light objects to move.
As of 09:14 AM local time, BMKG confirmed that no aftershocks had been detected.
BMKG Urges Calm and Preparedness
BMKG advised the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Residents are urged to stay away from damaged buildings and check the structural safety of their homes.
“Provincial, regency, and city governments under ‘Alert’ (Awas) status should immediately carry out full evacuation procedures,” Daryono emphasized.
“Authorities under ‘Standby’ (Siaga) status should begin limited evacuations, while those in areas under ‘Watch’ (Waspada) status are advised to stay away from coastal and river areas,” he added.
