ASIATODAY.ID, BRASILIA – Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva conveyed the priority agenda for the 2024 G20 Brazil Presidency at the joint meeting of the G20 Sherpa Track and Finance Track in Brazil.
This time the G20 presented the African Union which was accepted as a new permanent member of the G20 as a result of an agreement in India’s 2023 G20 Presidency.
For information, the Sherpa line represents the Government in discussions on real economic, social and environmental sectors such as trade and investment, health, employment, environment, energy, education, women’s empowerment, agriculture, anti-corruption. Meanwhile, the financial channel represents a discussion of the fiscal, financial and monetary sectors.
Brazil’s 2024 G20 Presidency which begins on 1 December 2023 consists of 15 working groups and involves 12 community groups outside the Government (engagement groups) in the Sherpa route until the summit on 18-19 November 2024.
The three main priorities of the Presidency are: (1) Establishment of a global alliance to combat hunger and poverty; (2) Global mobilization to address climate change; and (3) World governance (global governance).
President Lula, who succeeded in bringing Brazil out of the Hunger Map according to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in 2014, brought his success story into the main issue of Brazil’s G20 Presidency which intends to form a “network of networks” through global alliances.
This alliance will mobilize world international institutions that have programs to overcome hunger and poverty, such as the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), WFP and World Bank through 3 pillars, namely national, financial and knowledge.
Brazil has the ambition to provide global coordination in fighting hunger and poverty by sharing successful experiences, technical and financial assistance between countries.
Apart from that, President Lula in his statement emphasized his invitation to overcome the problem of hunger and poverty which has increased after the pandemic due to limited access to food and nutrition.
President Lula also touched on the current world situation which is experiencing increasing conflict, especially the Israeli-Palestinian war which has caused many civilian casualties and firmly said that Brazil will seek a permanent ceasefire, distribution of humanitarian aid, and urge a resolution through a two-state solution.
President Lula invited the G20 to take concrete action on the three priorities of Brazil’s G20 Presidency.
Regarding the situation of world order, President Lula mentioned that 5 countries alone are not enough to represent global interests in the United Nations (UN) because they only represent the interests of 2.5 percent of the world.
With the dynamics of current world challenges, regional representation is important in the UN to carry out the mission of world peace, maintain political stability, and overcome welfare disparities between regions.
Furthermore, President Lula stated the importance of financing climate change, which currently faces many obstacles due to the bureaucratic system. The tax system as an instrument to overcome inequality needs to present a progressive tax system based on income and welfare for sustainable development.
Women’s empowerment also did not escape President Lula’s attention and was discussed in the G20 forum as part of commitment and solidarity. New dynamics such as the widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) need to have basic principles in the global order.
Bioeconomy to mobilize more productive natural resources, including important points emphasized by President Lula in front of the G20 Sherpas and Finance and Central Bank Deputies from 19 countries and the 2 largest regions in the world.
Meanwhile, at the meeting, the Republic of Indonesia Delegation was represented by the Deputy for International Economic Cooperation Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy/Indonesian G20 Co-Sherpa Edi Prio Pambudi, Special Staff of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Strengthening Priority Programs/Indonesian G20 Co-Sherpa Dian Triansyah Djani, and Expert Staff to the Minister of Finance for Macroeconomics and International Finance/G20 Finance Deputy Parjiono.
