ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is again involved in the United Nations Forum on Forest (UNFF). This year is the 19th time the forum has been held at the UN Headquarters in New York City, United States, on 6-10 May 2024.
The Indonesian delegation was led by the Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry, Alue Dohong.
Indonesia is directly involved in various strategic discussions regarding forest policy at the main forum, and will also hold side events at the UNFF venue. The activity consisted of discussions discussing monitoring and improving forest use with experts. Indonesia also specifically held an exhibition during the 5 days of UNFF 19.
“Indonesia has exceeded the national target in reducing deforestation rates below 0.45 million hectares, where currently deforestation activities are recorded at 0.104 million hectares in 2022. Apart from that, Indonesia has also committed to achieving the social forestry allocation target of 12.7 million hectares. million hectares,” said Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry, Alue Dohong at the First Plenary Meeting of UNFF 19 in New York.
Another thing that Alue also conveyed was related to Indonesia’s steps in developing a forest-based economy. This is demonstrated through various community empowerment in the public economic sector.
Meanwhile, at the 19th Forum for Forests, Indonesia demonstrated a number of achievements in managing forests and land through exhibitions held along the UNFF agenda. This achievement was obtained from Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda, which is a mitigation action in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially from the forestry sector and other land uses. Not only from a policy perspective, this exhibition also presents green actions and the use of Indonesian non-timber forest products.
UNFF is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with universal membership. Since its inception in 2000, the forum has produced a number of significant agreements, starting with the first UN Forest Instrument in 2007, the Global Forest Financing Facilitation Network (GFFFN) in 2015, and the adoption of the first UN Forest Strategic Plan for 2030 and six Goals Global Forests in 2017.
At this year’s event, UNFF will focus on medium-term targets for International Arrangements on Forests. By assessing progress achieved and identifying existing gaps, participating country delegates will chart a course towards 2030 to ensure achievement of the Global Forest Goals is aligned with SDGs targets. Furthermore, the step forward of the 19th UNFF was marked by the declaration of a High-Level Segment and an omnibus resolution, which will include the results of the mid-term review as well as the Forum’s new Quadrennial Work Program for 2025-2028.
