ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Extreme weather struck Sumatra in early December 2025, leaving deep scars.
BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani revealed it triggered landslides, massive infrastructure damage, and rising casualties. Thousands of homes were swept away, families separated, roads cut off.
Follow-up flash floods worsened the crisis in several districts, creating urgent needs for food, clean water, medicine, and shelter.
BNPB reported over 900 deaths and hundreds missing. Economic losses have reached trillions of rupiah. Amid the grief, national solidarity rises through humanitarian actions from various parties.
As the corporate venture capital arm of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), BRI Ventures actively participates in easing the burden on affected communities.
The first donation distribution took place on December 12 in Sibolga, about 15 hours from Medan, with the next phase planned for Aceh Tamiang, around 5 hours from Medan.
Donations were delivered in the form of food staples like rice and other essentials, and survival kits–containing daily necessities such as clothing and prayer tools–to support basic needs at disaster sites.
All assistance is channeled through Yayasan Baitul Maal BRILiaN (YBM BRILiaN), BRI’s official and proven reliable philanthropic institution, ensuring targeted support for medical logistics, nutritious food, evacuation tents, and basic infrastructure rehabilitation in impacted areas.
“Our hearts are with our brothers and sisters in Sumatra facing these difficult times. We believe even the smallest aid can make a big difference. Through this donation, we want to share our care and extend a helping hand to those struggling, showing that we are not alone. In tough times, mutual care is our greatest strength,” said Markus L Rahardja, Acting President Director of BRI Ventures on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
BRI Ventures also invites communities, partners, and the wider public to join this wave of goodness. Together, we can accelerate Sumatra’s recovery and build a more resilient future. (Silvia Andriani)
