ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) through the Earth and Maritime Research Organization (ORKM) together with the International Oceanographic Governance and Services (IOGOOS) held the “International Indian Ocean Science Conference (IIOSC) 2024” in Lombok on Monday – Friday, 4 – 8 March 2024.
This international conference aims to open up opportunities and expand cooperation between BRIN, IOGOOS and the academic community in utilizing research results, increase stakeholder insight regarding research and research results, and increase better understanding of the Indian Ocean ecosystem.
The Indian Ocean has an important role in supporting life and balancing the earth’s ecosystem. The Indian Ocean is rich in biodiversity and plays a role in regulating regional and global climate. However, there are environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction that threaten the sustainability of the Indian Ocean ecosystem.
BRIN’s Earth and Maritime Research Organization (ORKM) has a role in strengthening the aquaculture and fisheries sector through innovation research. It is hoped that these efforts will improve community welfare and contribute to a better understanding of the Indian Ocean ecosystem.
Chairman of the IIOSC 2024 activities, Wahyu Purbiantoro, stated that this conference aims to review scientific progress and knowledge obtained through the joint efforts of BRIN and IOGOOS. This conference discusses action plans to overcome problems leading to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
“IIOSC 2024 marks an important milestone in the joint efforts of stakeholders to advance marine science for sustainable development,” said Wahyu, quoted Tuesday, March 5 2024.
It is hoped that the collaboration between BRIN and IOGOOS will open wider opportunities for knowledge exchange and cooperation in the field of Indian Ocean ecosystem research.
IOGOOS itself is an organization that operates in regional cooperation in the field of marine and maritime resource management. IOGOOS aims to develop programs for implementation in the Indian Ocean and promote activities of mutual interest for the development of operational oceanography in the region.
The choice of Lombok as the venue for the activity aims to support universities and stakeholders in the central and eastern regions of Indonesia. Apart from that, it is also to introduce new infrastructure which was inaugurated as the ‘National Facility for Maritime-Based Halal Product Research and Innovation by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia in March 2023.
The IOGOOS delegation will visit various institutions and organizations over a period of 1 week, including the Research Center in the ORKM – BRIN environment.
The activities scheduled for five days consist of Indian Ocean Regional Panel (IORP) meetings, Sustained Indian Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research (SIBER), IndOOS Resource Forum (IRF), International Indian Ocean Expedition-2 (IIOE-2) Steering Group meetings, and Korea-US Indian Ocean Scientific (KUDOS).
