ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indef Senior Economist Faisal Basri has been accusing Indonesian nickel of leaking to China for a long time. Even though the Indonesian government has banned the export of nickel ore abroad.
This information became controversial and long made national headlines. Interestingly, the data on the entry of Indonesian nickel ore comes from Chinese authorities, not from Indonesia.
Now it turns out it’s no longer a leak. Faisal Basri actually revealed that the latest data was truly astonishing. From 2020 to 2023, the total nickel ore exported will reach 5.6 million tons. The nickel ore was sent to China. In fact, since January 1 2020 the Government has banned the export of nickel ore.
“The data comes from Chinese import data collected by the International Trade Center (ITC),” said Faisal in his presentation received by Asiatoday.id, Friday, June 28 2023.
From ITC data, said Faisal Basri, nickel ore exports to China in 2020 were recorded at 3.4 million tons. Following in 2021 it will be 800 thousand tons. In 2022 it will increase to 1.1 million tons and in 2023 it will be recorded at 300 thousand tons.
“So total nickel ore exports to China from 2020-2023 will reach 5.6 million tons,” said Faisal Basri.
Ironically, continued Faisal Basri, from the Indonesian side there is no export data to China or to the world since 2020.
“From the Chinese side, it turns out that imports from Indonesia are still being recorded by customs,” said Faisal Basri.
Faisal Basri also previously made a statement inviting public attention that 3.4 million tons of Indonesian nickel ore leaked into China in 2020. At that time, Faisal Basri admitted that he got the data from the General Customs Administration of China (GCAC). (ATN)
