ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that climate disasters that will occur throughout 2023 will hit Asia the most, with floods and storms causing the most casualties.
The published report stated that 79 disasters related to hydrometeorological events had been reported in Asia in 2023. More than 80 percent of them were related to floods and storms that caused more than 2,000 people to die.
“Many countries in the Asian region experienced the hottest year ever recorded in 2023, along with a series of extreme conditions, ranging from droughts and heat waves to floods and storms,” said WMO Secretary General, Celeste Saulo, Wednesday, April 24 2024.
He also emphasized that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of these events.
According to the WMO, Asia is warming faster than the global average. Last year, high average temperatures were recorded from western Siberia to central Asia, as well as from eastern China to Japan
The report also highlights that most glaciers in high mountain regions in Asia have lost significant mass due to record-breaking high temperatures and dry conditions. (ATN)
