ASIATODAY.ID, SURABAYA — Deputy for the Coordination of Community Economic Empowerment and Migrant Worker Protection at the Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment, Leontinus Alpha Edison, conducted a working visit to Kana Cooperative.
The visit aimed to directly observe how the cooperative manages its business operations, empowers its members, and maintains a balance between its social function and economic activities.
The agenda forms part of the government’s effort to study cooperatives considered capable of managing institutional frameworks and business operations in a structured and effective manner. The experience of Kana Cooperative is expected to serve as a reference for strengthening cooperatives across Indonesia.
Over the course of two days, Leontinus and officials from the Coordinating Ministry reviewed various activities carried out by Kana Cooperative.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, the delegation visited a palm sugar factory, PT Indogula Jayabaya, one of Kana Cooperative’s business units located in Kediri, East Java. There, they observed the sugarcane processing operations and examined the distribution channels managed by the cooperative.
The following day, Friday, April 24, 2026, the visit continued at Kana Cooperative’s office in Surabaya. At this location, the focus was on cooperative governance, including the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs), institutional structure, human resource management, financial systems, and the overall business process flow. The objective was to understand how the cooperative conducts its daily operations based on principles of accountability and transparency.
Leontinus emphasized the importance of cooperatives as drivers of community-based economic growth.
He stated that cooperatives can only deliver optimal benefits when managed professionally and aligned with the interests of their members.
“A cooperative is not merely a platform for collective enterprise, but also a key instrument for improving members’ welfare. Transparent, accountable governance that prioritizes members’ interests is essential for ensuring that cooperatives grow in a healthy and competitive manner,” Leontinus said.
In addition to examining governance and best practices, the visit also highlighted how the cooperative manages its supply chain, production, distribution, and accountable financial systems. These aspects serve as important learning points in building stronger, more adaptive cooperatives that deliver tangible added value to their members.
Chairman of Kana Cooperative, Jonathan Danang Wardhana, warmly welcomed the visit. He expressed hope that the occasion would pave the way for closer collaboration between the government and cooperatives.
“We hope this visit becomes a stepping stone toward strengthening collaboration between the government and cooperatives, particularly in expanding economic benefits for members and developing competitive cooperative business models,” Jonathan said.
This visit represents a valuable opportunity for all parties to exchange knowledge and experiences, while reinforcing the national cooperative ecosystem to become more transparent, professional, and capable of delivering real benefits to its members. (Silvia Andriani)
