ASIATODAY.ID, PANGKALPINANG – The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) said crocodiles from Australia entered the waters of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and attacked people in the area.

“The origin of the crocodiles in conflict in NTT yesterday came from Australia,” said BRIN Senior Herpetologist, Hellen Kurniati when speaking at a public discussion on the conflict between crocodiles and humans in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province in Pangkalpinang, Wednesday.

He said that in dealing with the conflict between crocodiles and humans in NTT, various methods had been taken, including evacuating estuarine crocodiles that were in conflict with the community to the Natural Resources Conservation Center’s Crocodile Hatchery and they also contacted the crocodiles for food.

In the end, the regional government in NTT carried out an investigation into the origins of the conflict crocodile, he said, because this crocodile came from the sea. The result turned out to be that the crocodile came from Australia.

“We are grateful that the Australian Government has finally helped the regional government in NTT evacuate the conflict crocodiles,” he said.

According to him, humans and crocodiles are not destined to live together and someone must give in. If no one gives in, there will continue to be conflict between humans and crocodiles.

“Conflicts between humans and crocodiles have occurred everywhere and most recently I handled conflicts between crocodiles and humans in NTT,” he said.

He stated that this conflict with humans is because crocodiles behave like that and must make various efforts to minimize conflicts with these crocodiles.

“One way to prevent this conflict is to evacuate the conflicting crocodiles,” said Hellen Kurniati. (ANT)
