ASIATODAY.ID, CILACAP – A spotted shark (Rhincodon typus) died stranded on Welahan Wetan Beach, Cilacap Regency, Central Java.

“Initially, when the fishermen found the spotted shark, it was still alive,” said Head of the Cilacap Region Conservation Resort, Central Java Natural Resources Conservation Center, Wahyono, Wednesday, November 29 2023.

His party together with the East Nusakambangan Forestry Police Partner Community and related agencies immediately went to evacuate the spotted shark carcass and then buried it.

“We have also reported this to the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Supervision because the spotted shark is a protected animal based on Decree of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Number 18 of 2013,” explained Wahyono.

The death of Leopard Sharks in this area did not only happen this time. Member of the Cilacap Disaster Preparedness Cadets (Tagana), Andreas Tugiman, revealed that previously spotted shark carcasses had been found several times.

“In the last five months a total of five marine mammals have died stranded, one whale and four spotted sharks,” said Tugiman.

The shark carcasses were found stranded at several points along the coastline between Adipala District and Nusawungu District. This coastline is about 20 kilometers long.

According to Tugiman, the last time a spotted shark was found dead stranded not far from the current discovery location was last August.

“The one that was previously stranded was bigger, about 6 meters long and weighing up to 1 ton. The discovery location was about 1 kilometer to the west,” said Tugiman.

All the sharks that died stranded were buried not far from the discovery location. According to Tugiman, the dead leopard shark was stranded allegedly due to high waves that occurred in the sea south of Java.
“Due to the high waves that are currently hitting, the spotted shark is stranded,” explained Tugiman. (AT Network)
