ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – European Investment Bank (EIB) Global approved a loan worth 500 million euros to PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (PT SMI) in Indonesia.
PT SMI President Director Edwin Syahruzad said the loan would be used to fund environmental control projects, energy transition and sustainable infrastructure development in Indonesia.
According to Edwin Syahruzad, EIB support is able to enable PT SMI to grow further and become a leader in the energy transition sector and a wider scope of sustainable infrastructure development in Indonesia. This is an important period for taking action on climate change.
“EIB’s focus on environmentally friendly and sustainable projects is in line with PT SMI’s priorities. We are pleased with EIB’s intention to collaborate with PT SMI in this regard. We believe that with EIB’s support, PT SMI can grow further and continue to be a leader not only in the transition sector energy, but also within the broader scope of sustainable infrastructure development in Indonesia,” he said in a press statement quoted on Thursday, February 29 2024.
Indonesia’s steps towards sustainable and environmentally friendly growth are now gaining momentum. In collaboration with PT SMI, EIB Global is committed to supporting and accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia.
Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) for the Southeast Asia region, Robert de Groot, assessed that the signing of the MoU between PT SMI and EIB Global marked a significant step towards achieving the net zero emission target in Indonesia by 2060.
“This unites our efforts and allows us to achieve more,” said Robert de Groot.
EIB Global’s commitment to encourage investment in climate change mitigation and resilience, is part of the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative.
Meanwhile, the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia Denis Chaibi stated that the MoU between PT SMI and EIB is a real illustration of the European Union’s efforts to encourage sustainable investment in Indonesia.
“This also shows the European Union’s ongoing commitment to fulfilling its promise for the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). This partnership requires coordinated efforts to build energy infrastructure projects and mobilize funding. This loan will be an important contribution in Team Europe’s support for the energy transition in Indonesia ,” he added.
PT SMI and EIB will explore collaboration in the form of project origination, such as knowledge sharing, capacity building and technical assistance related to the energy transition in Indonesia.
“PT SMI has successfully formed active partner relationships with local and international banks aimed at developing capital from the government that does not only rely on the capital market,” said Edwin Syahruzad. (ATN)
