ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto received a visit from the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Denis Chaibi at the Office of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, Friday, November 24 2023.
The visit was in the context of introducing the new Ambassador Chaibi to replace the previous EU Ambassador, H.E Vincent Piket.
Coordinating Minister Airlangga and Ambassador Chaibi discussed the development and follow-up of Indonesia-European Union economic cooperation relations, including related to the progress of negotiations on the Indonesia – European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), downstream policies in Indonesia, as well as the political situation of the two parties involved. will hold general elections in 2024.
Ambassador Chaibi welcomed the development of EU relations with Indonesia and appreciated the increasingly better investment climate in Indonesia. “Indonesia is an engine of growth,” said Ambassador Chaibi.
Currently, Indonesia is one of the investment diversification destinations for EU member countries. This is reflected in the value of trade and investment with the three main EU member countries, namely Spain, France and Germany.
The current priority for both parties is the completion of the Indonesia-EU CEPA negotiations which have been going on for 7 years.
Coordinating Minister Airlangga emphasized that the 16th round of negotiations which will be held in early December 2023 is the “golden time” to substantively complete negotiations considering that Indonesia and the EU will enter the political year in 2024.
“The two leaders have stated on several occasions since last year that the target for substantive completion of the IEU-CEPA negotiations is at the end of 2023 or at the latest in early 2024. Indonesia also has a clear high-level mandate from the President of the Republic of Indonesia regarding five matters. the. “IEU-CEPA policy strategy issues,” stressed Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
In connection with the downstream policy in Indonesia, the EU hopes that the concerns of each party regarding the downstream policy for critical raw minerals will not hinder the IEU-CEPA completion process.
