ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia said that two Indonesian citizens with the status of illegal migrant workers and victims of human trafficking were shot after being held captive and tortured by a separatist group in the city of Myawaddy, Myanmar. In that country, they work as online gambling and scamming operators.
“Two people were confirmed to have suffered gunshot wounds to their legs,” said Judha Nugraha, Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities, MOFA, Friday, February 21 2025.
The two victims were among the 46 victims of human trafficking who were successfully repatriated via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten on Thursday, February 20 evening.
“So far, we have succeeded in repatriating 46 people from Myawaddy, Myanmar,” he said.
The return and pick-up of 46 migrant workers from Myawaddy City was carried out in two stages using two airlines, namely Batik Air ID7630 ETD which arrived at 23.55 WIB and Air Asia QZ257 ETD at 00.10 WIB.
“A total of 46 migrant workers come from nine provinces in Indonesia. So this is a long effort from the Indonesian government to repatriate them from Myanmar,” he said.
Judha said that the majority of dozens of Indonesian citizens who became illegal migrant workers came from nine provinces, including North Sumatra, West Java, North Sulawesi, Jakarta and so on. Where, one of them is a former member of the Indramayu Regional People’s Representative Council with the initials R.
“We can confirm that of the 46 migrant workers, one of them is a former member of the Indramayu parliament with the initials R,” he explained.
Judha added that currently there are 270 Indonesian citizens who are still in Myawaddy, Myanmar.
“We will immediately carry out an in-depth investigation into the party who sent them so that we can provide firm law enforcement,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director General for Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, Rinardi, added that of all the migrant workers who were successfully repatriated from Myanmar, data collection and assessment would then be carried out by the Ministry of Social Affairs as a handling step, and then sent back to their areas of origin.
