ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Riots accompanied by anarchic actions erupted in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) area in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Sunday, March 2 2025.
The incident was triggered by a demonstration by contractor employees who then set fire to a company facility car.
The employees protested against the implementation of new regulations regarding the use of buses as a substitute for pickup vehicles to transport contractor employees. This rule was issued by the management of PT IMIP together with the tenants for work safety reasons.
Previously, since yesterday, all contractor vehicles using open trucks were prohibited from entering the IMIP area.
In the morning, the crowd who did not accept the ban attacked security officers and damaged company facilities. A number of safety patrol cars belonging to PT IMIP were reportedly burned. Apart from that, this incident caused several security officers and an employee of PT Dexin Steel Indonesia (DSI) to suffer injuries as a result of being beaten.
PT IMIP Management Response
Head of Media Relations Department PT IMIP, Dedy Kurniawan, stated that his party deeply regrets the anarchic actions carried out by contractor employees. He emphasized that this action was detrimental to many parties, including the contractors themselves.
Dedy also emphasized that the rules for using buses aim to reduce the risk of accidents due to the use of pickup trucks which are considered to endanger employee safety.
PT IMIP management, in collaboration with the local police, is currently thoroughly investigating this case. Security in industrial areas has also been tightened to prevent further riots. Until now, the police are still investigating the actors behind the acts of destruction and arson.
Meanwhile, operational activities in the IMIP area are reportedly running under strict supervision. (AT Network)
