Indonesia and Africa Begin to Explore Cooperation in Downstreaming Lithium Minerals

ASIATODAY.ID, BALI – Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana is exploring opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the downstream mineral industry, especially lithium. This is to encourage strengthening strategic partnerships between Indonesia and African countries in the energy and mineral sectors.

“I just heard from Mozambique, from Zimbabwe, that they have a lot of minerals, there are two things we want to offer. The first is to share our experience in that, and the second is to do it as a partnership,” explained Dadan as a panelist at the 2nd Indonesia – Africa Forum in Bali, Tuesday, 3 September 2024.

Dadan emphasized that Indonesia is ready to share experiences and establish closer partnerships with African countries in the long term so as to accelerate economic growth in both regions.

“For some things we share the same challenges and opportunities, we can complement each other,” he continued.

On this occasion, Dadan touched on Indonesia’s success in developing biodiesel as an effort to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He explained that Indonesia has currently mixed 35% biodiesel into diesel fuel, and is preparing to increase it to 40% next year.

“We have succeeded in implementing the substitution of diesel with our biodiesel, with palm oil-based fuel. This year, we mixed 35% biodiesel into diesel fuel,” he said.

In an effort to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, Dadan emphasized that Indonesia is currently revising a number of regulations, including the law on renewable energy, and expanding cooperation with developed countries.

“We are starting to collaborate with many developed countries. Based on our experience, there are at least two problems, namely technology and financing. This is what we must cooperate with, especially with developed countries,” he explained.

Indonesia’s cooperation with African countries in the energy sector includes various strategic initiatives, especially with Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar.

Indonesia has signed several MoUs with Kenya covering oil and gas exploration, mining exploration, renewable energy and geothermal cooperation.

Together with Tanzania, cooperation is focused on oil exploration, capacity development and energy resource development.

Meanwhile, Madagascar is collaborating with PT TIMAH in chrome exploration and plans to expand into the renewable energy sector. B2B collaboration is also carried out with several Indonesian companies, such as PT Wijaya Karya and PT LEN Energy, which are involved in power generation projects in Africa. (AT Network)
