ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, is collaborating with Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) to promote sustainable economic development.
This collaboration focuses on critical and strategic mineral supply chains, which are expected to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global mineral supply chain, while supporting NT Australia’s efforts to diversify its mineral supplies.
Indonesian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arie Havas Oegroseno emphasized the importance of diversifying partnerships not only with countries, but also with states that have significant capacity in the critical mineral industry.
“This Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and NT Australia can be a model for the Indonesian Government to look at various important and strategic states in Australia to collaborate,” he said, quoted from an official broadcast, Saturday, February 22 2025.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, said that the content of this collaboration was in accordance with the Mineral and Coal Law which had just been passed. The focus of Indonesia’s mineral and coal development policy refers to the main objectives that reflect a balance between economic, environmental and social priorities.
“The focus is on supporting economic growth and creating jobs, with a priority on research, innovation and exploration to strengthen the security of mineral reserves,” said Dadan.
Decarbonization of the mining industry, according to Dadan, is an important step, involving the adoption of renewable energy, electrification of mining operations and advanced technologies.
“Indonesia also implements practices to prevent the loss of biodiversity and protect natural ecosystems, ensuring sustainable and responsible development efforts,” explained Dadan.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Trade, Business and Asian Relations of the Northern Territory of Australia, Hon Robyn Cahill, hopes that this partnership can be implemented immediately through concrete collaboration at the industry and government levels.
“Our resources continue to grow every day, we are discovering new reserves and opportunities, especially in the critical minerals sector. Many organizations and businesses have expressed their interest in investing in our region because of the significant opportunities,” he added.
For information, the Memorandum of Understanding on the Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chain itself was signed by both parties on November 12 2024. As an implementation of this collaboration, in April 2025 an Indonesia-NT Australia Mineral Roadshow will be held, in the form of a visit by Indonesian mining companies to NT, Australia. Then continue with a visit to Sulawesi (Sorowako and Morowali) or Maluku (Weda Bay) in May 2025.
Not only that, in 2025 joint studies and developments will also be carried out in the exploration of processing and refining technology to increase efficiency and sustainability.
