Indonesia and MIKTA Countries Agree to Eliminate Mercury Trade

ASIATODAY.ID, GENEVA – Indonesia together with MIKTA member countries (Mexico, South Korea, Turkiye and Australia) agreed to increase coordination and cooperation within the framework of the Minamata Convention.

“We are not only making all efforts to reduce and eliminate mercury to protect the environment from pollution and damage, but also to protect society, especially the nation’s future generations, from the dangers of mercury poisoning,” said MIKTA’s joint statement read by the Director General of Waste Management, Waste, Toxic and Hazardous Materials, Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, as Chair of the Republic of Indonesia Delegation while attending the Fifth Conference (COP5) of the Minamata Convention in Geneva, which took place from 29 October to 3 November 2023.

In their joint statement, MIKTA emphasized that their actions to reduce and eliminate mercury are not only aimed at protecting the environment from pollution and damage, but also to protect society, especially future generations, from the dangers of mercury poisoning.

MIKTA states that joint awareness, strategy and synergy are needed to successfully implement the Minamata Convention. They emphasized that individual efforts will not be enough to overcome obstacles to fulfilling commitments to this convention, and only coordinated action can produce constructive and effective solutions to ensure healthy lives and improve the well-being of society.

MIKTA also reiterated their commitment to promoting sustainable development throughout the world and achieving the 2030 Agenda, including through the implementation of the Minamata Convention.

This year, under Indonesia’s leadership, MIKTA Leaders held their first High Level Meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9 2023. This meeting provided encouragement to MIKTA members to further strengthen cooperation on global issues that concern them. relevant and strengthen their constructive role internationally.

The Minamata Convention is a global instrument that regulates the use of mercury globally with the aim of protecting human health and the environment from emissions and releases of mercury, as well as mercury compounds produced by humans.

In 2022, Indonesia became President of the 4th COP of the Minamata Convention which was held in Bali on 21-25 March 2022, and resulted in the Bali Declaration on Combating the Illegal Global Trade in Mercury. (AT Network)
