ASIATODAY.ID, BANGKOK – In a landmark development, Indonesia and Thailand have agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during the 10th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCM) held in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 2, 2025.
The meeting was co-chaired by Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, and Thailand’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maris Sangiampongsa, underscoring the two nations’ commitment to deepening cooperation across various sectors, including economic collaboration, protection of citizens, and regional stability.
Minister Sugiono emphasized that this upgraded partnership reflects the growing closeness between the two countries and a shared vision for regional stability and progress.
“This step reflects our increasingly close bilateral ties and our shared vision to make a greater contribution to the region,” said Foreign Minister Sugiono.
As a follow-up, both countries agreed to establish a Joint Working Team to draft a Strategic Partnership Roadmap, which will define priority sectors and deliver concrete outcomes ahead of the next high-level visit.
On the economic front, the two nations agreed to broaden market access for Indonesian products, particularly in agriculture, fisheries, and MSMEs, while also committing to new collaborations in green energy transition.
Minister Sugiono also welcomed the interest of Thai investors to partner with key Indonesian strategic enterprises.
The protection of Indonesian citizens abroad was another key agenda item. Both countries reaffirmed their joint commitment to combat human trafficking and strengthen law enforcement cooperation.
“I deeply appreciate the Thai Government’s support in repatriating Indonesian victims of trafficking. We must continue enhancing collaboration to eliminate this transnational crime,” stated Minister Sugiono.
Beyond bilateral concerns, the two ministers exchanged views on regional and global issues, including the ongoing conflict in Palestine, the situation in Myanmar, and the role of ASEAN in safeguarding peace and stability in the region.
“Today’s meeting lays a new foundation for a stronger, broader, and more strategic relationship between Indonesia and Thailand,” Minister Sugiono concluded. (AT Network)
