ASIATODAY.ID, TANGERANG – The Indonesian government has decided to immediately transfer death row convict for narcotics smuggling, Mary Jane Veloso, to her home country of the Philippines.
“In the next one to two days, Mary Jane will immediately be transferred to the Philippines,” said the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra in the 2024 End of Year Reflection press conference, Monday, December 16 2024.
Yusril said that currently convict Mary Jane is at the Pondok Bambu Jakarta Penitentiary after being transferred by officers from the Yogyakarta Class IIB Women’s Penitentiary using land routes.
“Just waiting for the final stage, we can be transferred to the Philippines. Everything is going smoothly and it’s just a matter of time,” Yusril emphasized.
He expressed his appreciation to the three ministries under him, namely the Ministry of Law, Ministry of Human Rights and Ministry of Immigration and Corrections because the collaboration carried out was able to complete the process of repatriating death row inmates for narcotics cases.
“Thank you, the ranks of the three ministries are very harmonious, all these steps have been implemented well,” he said.
The governments of the Philippines and Indonesia have agreed to transfer Mary Jane through a practical agreement. The Philippine government agreed to all the conditions proposed by Indonesia for Mary Jane’s transfer to her hometown.

Mary Jane Veloso is on death row for smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroin. She was arrested at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta in April 2010. Mary Jane was sentenced to death by the Sleman Court in October 2010. (AT Network)
