ASIATODAY.ID, DUBAI – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) attended the G77 and China Summit as part of the World Climate Action Summit (WCAS) COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on Saturday, December 2 2023.

In his speech, President Jokowi said that COP28 was a forum to strengthen implementation in taking real action in dealing with climate change.

“COP28 must be an event to strengthen implementation, not an event to show ambition. “The Paris agreement principle must be a guideline that responsibilities must be divided according to national capabilities,” said President Jokowi at the Al Ghafat Plenary, Expo City Dubai.

For this reason, President Jokowi expressed Indonesia’s support for the G77 and China, and also invited all parties to take joint action.

Jokowi conveyed three points that could be implemented.

First, President Jokowi invited all parties to strengthen south-south cooperation by reviving the spirit of Bandung. This is because solidarity, equality and collaboration are very necessary in handling global climate change.

“Through the South-South cooperation framework, Indonesia has provided climate management training for the Africa, South Asia, Latin America, Caribbean and Pacific regions,” he continued.

Second, President Jokowi explained that Indonesia’s chairmanship of international conferences had resulted in a number of actions and views in dealing with global climate change.

“Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN has created the ASEAN taxonomy. Indonesia’s G20 Presidency established a mixed financing scheme and state platform. The Indonesian carbon exchange has also been operating since last September,” continued President Jokowi.

President Jokowi also emphasized the importance of cohesiveness and inclusiveness in fulfilling the global agenda. He encouraged a global inventory or global stocktake to reflect the funding needs of developing countries as well as commitments from developed countries that have not been fulfilled.

“The loss and damage funding structure should not take the form of burdensome debt and should be easy to access,” he added.

In addition, transparency and certainty in new collective funding targets must be carried out with the support of adequate resources and technology.

“Through our joint efforts, the G77 and China can become a driving force for the world’s climate agenda,” said President Jokowi. (AT Network)
