ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian diplomacy continues to show great influence on the global stage. Over the past 5 years, Indonesian diplomacy has always made positive achievements. In fact, Indonesia became the country with the strongest diplomatic influence in Southeast Asia in 2024.
Reporting from annual data from the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index 2024, which released the Diplomatic Influence Index for this year, this index assesses a country’s diplomatic network, multilateral strength, and foreign policy.
Based on the Asia Power Index, Indonesia’s diplomatic influence score in 2024 reached 65.6, an increase of 5.1 points compared to the previous year. This achievement brought Indonesia to sixth place and its highest position since 2018.
Indonesia managed to outperform Vietnam and Singapore, which scored 58.6 and 57.1 respectively. Malaysia is in fourth place with 52.9, while Thailand closes the top five with 52.6.
Indonesia’s influence in the Southeast Asian region is greater than expected, given the resources available, as reflected in its positive country power gap score.
In 2023, Indonesia managed to sit in first place with a score of 60.4 points on a 100-point scale. Likewise in 2024.
Previously, in 2021, Indonesia’s score reached 54 points on a 100-point scale and in 2020 Indonesia scored 52.3 points.
Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 also strengthened its influence in multilateral forums. Quoting the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, during the leadership period, Indonesia has successfully recorded a number of contributions, starting from maintaining the relevance and centrality of ASEAN, initiating the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), to building a long-term vision in the ASEAN Concord IV.
