Indonesia Prefers to Import Trains from China over Japan, Why?

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KAI Commuter) prefers to import electric rail trains (KRL) from China rather than Japan.

KAI has decided to import three new trainsets from a manufacturer from China, CRRC Sifang Co. Ltd. In fact, the price of trains from Japan previously mentioned in JR East’s proposal is much cheaper.

The purchase was official after the two parties signed a Cooperation Contract for the Procurement of New Electric Railway Facilities (KRL) on Wednesday, January 31 2024 in Beijing, China.

KAI Commuter President Director Asdo Artriviyanto said that his party purchased three new KRL series with the KCI-SFC120-V type. The funds spent on importing these three trainsets amounted to IDR 783 billion.

Apart from importing new KRL trains, KAI Commuter is also retrofitting existing train trains. KAI Commuter also ordered 16 train sets from PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero) or Inka.

Meanwhile, the price of the train set made in China is more expensive than the train set made in Japan which was also considered by the company.

On September 19 2023, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) as the parent company of KAI Commuter received a train price proposal from a Japanese company, JR East.

PT KAI’s Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development, John Robertho, in a Hearing Meeting with Commission V of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Tuesday, 19 September 2023, said that based on the price proposal provided by JR East dated 30 June 2023, one trainset consists of 12 The carriage is priced at around IDR 225.6 billion.

“So, to import these 3 new trainsets from Japan we need IDR 676.8 billion,” explained John at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the source of funds for the rejuvenation of the KRL fleet came from several sources.

Asdo said, one source of these funds was a loan taken by KAI Commuter. Then, KAI Commuter will also receive a shareholder loan from its parent company, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or KAI as well as assistance from the Government through State Capital Participation (PMN).

Asdo added, this new KRL import is a fulfillment of the number of train facilities in accordance with the service needs of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi (Jabodetabek) Commuter Line users in 2024-2025, which has reached almost 1 million users per day. (ATN)
