ASIATODAY.ID, PYONGYANG — At the invitation of the Foreign Minister of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Choe Son Hui, Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, paid an official visit to Pyongyang on October 10–11, 2025.
This marks the first visit by an Indonesian Foreign Minister to the DPRK in 12 years, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
During the bilateral meeting on October 11, the two Foreign Ministers exchanged views on the long-standing friendship between Indonesia and the DPRK and discussed ways to further enhance mutually beneficial cooperation. Both sides agreed to explore new areas of collaboration across multiple sectors.
Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to facilitate closer engagement between the DPRK and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including through greater DPRK participation in ASEAN-led mechanisms such as the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).
This initiative reflects Indonesia’s active role in promoting dialogue and constructive cooperation in the East Asian and Southeast Asian regions.
In the spirit of strengthening bilateral relations, the two Ministers signed a Renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations, which will serve as a platform to explore potential cooperation in areas such as politics, socio-cultural exchange, technical collaboration, and sports.
The renewal of the MoU reaffirms the historic friendship between Indonesia and North Korea, rooted in the solidarity established by President Soekarno and President Kim Il Sung more than six decades ago.
On the evening prior to the meeting, Minister Sugiono also attended the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the Workers’ Party of Korea, at the invitation of the DPRK Government.
Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the DPRK have flourished since the 1960s, grounded in mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared commitment to national independence. Minister Sugiono’s visit underscores Indonesia’s continuing commitment to fostering peaceful engagement and inclusive regional cooperation in East Asia. (AT Network)
