ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia and Russia are moving to deepen their strategic partnership as both countries seek to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, industrial development and advanced technology, reflecting Jakarta’s broader strategy to diversify its global economic partnerships amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
The renewed commitment comes as Indonesia and Russia mark 76 years of diplomatic relations, with bilateral economic ties continuing to strengthen. Trade between the two countries reached US$5 billion in 2025, while the number of Russian visitors to Indonesia has continued to grow following the launch of direct flights between Moscow and Bali.
Speaking at the reception marking Russia’s National Day in Jakarta on Monday, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the relationship had evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership built on mutual respect and shared interests.
“For more than seven decades, our partnership has continued to grow on the foundation of mutual respect and common interests. This strong foundation remains the cornerstone of our cooperation today,” Airlangga said.
Beyond trade, Indonesia sees Russia as a key partner in supporting its long-term economic transformation agenda, particularly in downstream industrial development, infrastructure, energy security, manufacturing, digital transformation, science and technology, and sustainable development.
The latest momentum follows the 14th Indonesia–Russia Joint Commission on Trade, Economic and Technical Cooperation, held in Kazan in May 2026 and co-chaired by Airlangga and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. The meeting reaffirmed both governments’ commitment to accelerating cooperation through stronger engagement between public institutions and the private sector.
A major catalyst for future growth is the Indonesia–Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (Indonesia–EAEU FTA), signed in December 2025. Once implemented, the agreement is expected to expand market access, facilitate trade and encourage greater investment flows between Indonesia and the five-member Eurasian Economic Union, including Russia.
Indonesia is also set to participate as a Partner Country at Russia’s premier international industrial exhibition next month, providing new opportunities for collaboration in advanced manufacturing, automotive industries, energy, industrial technology and digital innovation.
The strengthening partnership comes as Indonesia continues to broaden its economic engagement beyond traditional markets, while Russia intensifies its economic presence across Asia amid shifting global trade patterns. For Jakarta, deeper cooperation with Moscow aligns with its strategy of building resilient and diversified international partnerships to support sustainable economic growth and industrial transformation.
Officials from both countries expressed confidence that the expanding relationship would create new opportunities for businesses, investors and technology cooperation, reinforcing Indonesia–Russia ties as one of the emerging pillars of economic collaboration between Southeast Asia and Eurasia.
