ASIATODAY.ID, TELUK BINTUNI – Indonesia is set to mark a new milestone in its energy sector by developing the ninth-largest Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility in the world — and the largest ever built in the country.
This announcement was made by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, during an official visit to two major gas companies: Genting Oil Kasuri and Tangguh LNG, located in Teluk Bintuni, West Papua, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
“This will be the largest floating LNG facility in Indonesia and, according to the report we received, the ninth largest in the world. But we will validate the progress. I will send a team to inspect the plant currently under construction in China,” said Minister Bahlil.
According to Genting Oil Kasuri’s management, the FLNG construction has reached 53% physical progress. The Indonesian government plans to dispatch a verification team to ensure the reported progress and technical readiness of the mega-project.
In June 2024, Genting Group, through its subsidiary PT Layar Nusantara Gas, signed a contract with Wison New Energies for the procurement of the FLNG unit worth USD 962.8 million. The facility will have a production capacity of 1.2 million metric tons per annum (mtpa), and is set to play a pivotal role in Indonesia’s national gas infrastructure.
The FLNG will be supplied with natural gas from the Asap Kido Merah (AKM) project, operated by Genting Oil Kasuri. The AKM block is projected to begin production in 2027, with an output of 330 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).
This FLNG development marks a significant leap for Indonesia in leveraging advanced energy technologies and expanding its gas infrastructure. Not only will it strengthen Indonesia’s standing in the global LNG market, but it will also generate employment, attract further investment to eastern Indonesia, and accelerate regional development in West Papua.
