ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, walked out when the Israeli ambassador to the US, Gilad Erdan, delivered a speech at the UN Security Council, Tuesday 23 January 2024.

This UN Security Council Open Debate is the third in the last 3 months.

Indonesia was present at the three UN sessions as a form of Indonesia’s consistency in supporting the Palestinian struggle.

Not only Retno Marsudi, several diplomats from countries that supported the ceasefire also walked out when Gilad Erdan expressed his opinion.

During a tense UN Security Council session centered on sending aid to Gaza, Gilad Erdan stated that the world is trying to overcome severe problems with Gaza. He also emphasized that wars will continue because Israel is trying to defend its future.

“This is not the war that Israel chose. But we will defend our future just as each of you defended the future of your country,” Gilad said.

Not only that, Erdan described the Israeli people as victims of the recent conflict in Gaza. With the presence of Iran’s foreign minister at the security council meeting, Erdan took the opportunity to reiterate Israel’s narrative regarding Iran’s alleged threat.

“The spillover of conflict does not happen magically. It was planned and instructed,” he further claimed.

Because the comments made did not heed the request for a ceasefire, several diplomats who asked for peace chose to walk out, including Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. (AT Network)
