Indonesian Parliament Condemns the Shooting Incident of Migrant Workers in Malaysia

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Representative Council, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, condemned the excessive use of force in the shooting incident of Indonesian migrant workers by the Malaysian maritime authority, Agensi Penguatkuasa Maritim Malaysia (APMM), which caused one fatality and four others were injured on Friday, January 24, 2025.

“We regret and condemn the excessive use of force carried out by APMM, the Malaysian maritime authority, which has killed one Indonesian citizen,” said Dasco in his statement in Jakarta, Monday, January 27 2025.

Dasco said that Parliament would form a team to monitor the APMM’s handling of the non-procedural shooting incident of five Indonesian Migrant Workers.

“The People’s Representative Council, through the relevant commission, will form a team to monitor the handling of this bloody incident so that the handling of this case can be revealed completely and transparently,” he said.

He also encouraged the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers to form an investigation team to reveal this bloody incident transparently.

Including, he said, providing legal assistance to shooting victims, and arranging for the repatriation of the bodies of shooting victims to be buried in their hometowns in Indonesia.

Furthermore, Dasco said he would immediately summon the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers to confirm the bloody incident, and encouraged the two ministries to take diplomatic steps to reveal the case completely and transparently.

“Currently, we have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuala Lumpur to send a diplomatic note to the Malaysian government regarding the shooting incident of five Indonesian migrant workers,” he said.

Not to forget, he also expressed his condolences for the death of one of the Indonesian migrant workers in the shooting incident in Malaysia which occurred in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Malaysia.

Previously, the non-procedural shooting incident of five Indonesian Migrant Workers by APMM occurred on Friday, January 24 at 03.00 in the morning Malaysian time.

The shooting incident resulted in one migrant worker being killed, another in critical condition, and three people being treated in several hospitals in Selangor, Malaysia. (AT Network)
