ASIATODAY.ID, DEPOK – A strong wave of solidarity for Palestine has once again emerged from Indonesia.
This time, prominent professors from leading Indonesian universities issued a powerful statement condemning Israel’s acts of genocide against Palestinians and urging for a fundamental reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which they view as unjust due to the veto power still controlled by five permanent members.
The declaration was delivered after the official launch of the UI Palestine Center at the Ukhuwah Islamiyah Mosque, University of Indonesia (UI) campus in Depok, Friday, September 19, 2025.
UI Rector Prof. Heri Hermansyah and Prof. Nuhfil Hanani from Brawijaya University represented the academic community in reading the joint statement, both wearing Palestinian scarves as a symbol of solidarity.
Professors’ Joint Statement: Palestine Must Be Free, UNSC Must Be Reformed
In their declaration, the professors emphasized the following points:
1. Indonesia will consistently safeguard the implementation of the 80th UN General Assembly resolution until Palestine achieves full independence, with clearly defined borders and a legitimate governing mandate.
2. Immediate deployment of UN Peacekeeping Forces to guarantee the safety and security of the Palestinian people.
3. Firm rejection of forced relocation of Gaza residents under the pretext of post-war reconstruction.
4. Demanding Israel to end its illegal occupation, withdraw from territories designated by UN Resolution 181 (1947), and be held accountable for war crimes before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
5. Strengthening Indonesia’s long-term support for Palestine, including humanitarian aid, healthcare, education, and economic partnerships to help build a free and self-reliant Palestinian state.
6. Pushing for UNSC reform, including abolishing the veto power and expanding permanent membership to ensure greater inclusivity, representation, and fairness.
7. Countering Zionist disinformation in Indonesia, which seeks to create division over sensitive issues such as diplomatic relations and refugee policies.
8. Backing President Prabowo Subianto to firmly voice Indonesia’s commitment to Palestinian independence and UNSC reform at the upcoming 80th UN General Assembly on September 23, 2025.
“The Palestine–Israel conflict is essentially the result of colonization, occupation, forced expulsions, and the systematic confiscation of Palestinian land by Zionism. Indonesia will continue to stand alongside Palestine until full independence is achieved,” the professors declared.

Growing International Support for Palestinian Statehood
Earlier, the UN General Assembly passed a historic resolution supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with 142 countries voting in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions.
