ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Climate change is having a dangerous impact on island ecosystems due to rising sea levels.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), sea level in Indonesia has increased by 0.8-1.2 centimeters (cm) per year due to the impact of climate change.
“This is significant because it has an impact on the disappearance of several small islands in Indonesian territory or coastal cities,” said the Coordinator of Research and Development for Climatology at the BMKG Center, Donaldi Permana, in a virtual seminar forum related to sustainable climate recently in Denpasar, Bali, Thursday, April 18, 2024.
In his presentation, Donaldi also mentioned the national situation that was affected by climate change, namely an increase in temperature of 0.45 to 0.75 degrees Celsius.
Apart from that, it is estimated that 5.8 million square kilometers of Indonesian waters are dangerous for fishing vessels, especially those measuring less than 10 gross tonnage (GT).
Then, as many as 18 thousand kilometers of coastline are estimated to be in the vulnerable category due to climate change and changes in rainfall of around 75 millimeters per month.
Meanwhile, the global average temperature has also increased over the last 10 years, namely 2014-2023, reaching 1.20 plus minus 0.12 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 period.
He explained that the increase in temperature causes global warming, especially due to high concentrations of carbon dioxide due to massive consumption of fossil energy, including coal and petroleum.
Apart from that, one of the reasons for deforestation is land clearing because it is associated with high demand following world population growth.
This increasing temperature has contributed to the melting of ice at the North and South Poles, which has pushed global sea levels to rise to around 4.72 millimeters per year in the period January 2013-December 2022.
“Those affected earlier by sea level rise are countries in tropical climate areas compared to countries in the northern and southern hemispheres,” he said.
To reduce global warming, he said that mitigation efforts need to be made, including reducing the use of fossil fuels and switching to using clean energy.
Apart from that, the green movement, saving electricity use, and reducing the use of private vehicles. (AT Network)
