Investing $9.8 Billion, Consortium of IBC, CATL and LG Ready to Produce EV Batteries Next Year

Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC). Doc

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Consortium of Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) and LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES) are ready to produce electric vehicle batteries with a total of 400 gigawatts per hour (GWH) starting in 2024.

In the initial stage, this consortium will produce the first electric vehicle batteries of 10 GWH and 5,000 battery swap stations.

“The amount we are doing for downstreaming, which has been confirmed with these two potential partners, is a total of around 400 gigawatts,” said President Director of Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), Toto Nugroho in a written statement, quoted Wednesday, December 13 2023.

According to Toto, this project is estimated to require an investment of $9.8 billion. This megaproject began with the construction of a $1.1 billion battery cell factory in Karawang, West Java which will produce commercial battery cells. Furthermore, the project will continue with the construction of a smelter, precursor and cathode factory, as well as mining cooperation at Antam’s location in Buli, Halmahera.

If realized, an electric vehicle ecosystem can be built so that this industrial ecosystem will provide multiple benefits in the form of increased state income and employment.

This ecosystem will have an impact on overall gross domestic product which will increase to 3,000 trillion rupiah in 30 years of operation.

In the future, this industrial ecosystem will also have an impact on reducing the use of fossil-powered vehicles so that fuel oil imports will also decrease.

“If we use EV cars it will save almost 26 million barrels, that is equivalent to almost $4-5 billion per year,” said Toto.

“The benefits if we downstream to battery EVs and ecosystem EVs, the reduction in CO2 emissions is almost 14 million tons per year, which is equivalent to 8-10 percent of transportation,” added Toto. (AT Network)
