ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) pays special attention to Indonesia which has a central role in the energy transition in Southeast Asia.
IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera said that Indonesia is a country that receives special attention from the agency in the field of energy transition. According to him, Indonesia is the country with the highest energy consumption in Southeast Asia.
“Indonesia is one of the few countries that has a domestic outlook from IRENA,” said La Camera, quoted Monday, January 13 2025.
Referring to Indonesia’s domestic outlook, La Camera explained that Indonesia has a key role in energy transition plans, especially in Southeast Asia. On the other hand, IRENA also highlights the abundant renewable resources in Indonesia.
By considering this, Indonesia is considered to have a strategic position to drive the energy transition, from fossil to sustainable energy. Not limited to overcoming the problem of climate change, this strategic position also allows Indonesia to guarantee energy security and affordability.
From data collected by IRENA, it was recorded that there would be an increase in Indonesia’s renewable energy capacity in the electricity sector in 2024. In the previous year, IRENA recorded an increase in renewable energy capacity in Indonesia, namely solar energy of 324 MW, bioenergy of 288 MW, and geothermal of 237 MW. However, the addition of fossil energy capacity in Indonesia is dominated by non-renewable energy, namely 6,632 MW.
Funding Platform
To support energy transition efforts, IRENA provides a funding platform, namely Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF), to help developing countries, including Indonesia.
“As we work to close the (energy transition) gap, we have a funding platform that currently consists of 14 partners,” said La Camera.
He explained that all energy transition projects, both private and government, could use the platform. After ETAF accepts the project, continued La Camera, IRENA will work with the proposing party to ensure the readiness of all documents to assess the predictability of the project. (AT Network)
