ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Jakarta’s ambition to become a global city is gaining momentum.
The Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, and the Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, have officially launched a strategic partnership to strengthen the tourism sector as a key driver of the capital’s transformation.
The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, July 3, 2025. The agreement covers a broad range of initiatives, from developing tourist destinations and hosting international events, to enhancing human resources and promoting sustainable tourism investment.
“We are pleased to align our vision with the Jakarta Provincial Government. Jakarta is Indonesia’s front door to the world. This partnership opens up new opportunities for synergy in tourism promotion, city planning, and world-class events,” said the Minister of Tourism.
Jakarta: A Growing Magnet for Global Travelers
Jakarta plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem. It serves as a major gateway for international visitors and contributes the second-largest share to Indonesia’s tourism-based Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).
In addition, the city frequently hosts high-profile international events that drive economic growth and create job opportunities.
Through this partnership, Jakarta is expected to better leverage its cultural heritage, rich history, and modern infrastructure to attract more quality domestic and international tourists in a sustainable manner.
Ambitious Tourism Targets for 2025
The Indonesian government has set ambitious tourism targets for 2025, aiming to attract 14.6 to 16 million international visitors and 1.08 billion domestic tourist trips. Cross-sector collaboration such as this is seen as essential to achieving these goals.
Key areas of cooperation between the Ministry of Tourism and the Jakarta Provincial Government include: Development of tourist destinations and attractions, Hosting international events and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), Enhancing Jakarta’s global tourism brand, Tourism human resource development, Data and information sharing in compliance with regulations, Sustainable investment and waste management in tourism areas, Promoting Clean Tourism for a Global Image.
Governor Pramono Anung emphasized Jakarta’s commitment to becoming a world-class city that is clean, welcoming, and attractive to tourists. A critical part of that vision involves managing waste in tourism zones.
“Waste used to be seen as a burden. Now, we’re turning it into an asset for Jakarta’s development. Programs like the Clean Tourism Movement have shown that tourism and sustainability can go hand-in-hand,” said Governor Pramono.
For instance, the Ministry of Tourism’s flagship program, Clean Tourism Movement, held in Kota Tua (Old Town Jakarta) on February 15–16, 2025, successfully collected 3.2 tons of waste, engaging over 1,000 participants from various sectors of society.
Also in attendance at the signing were senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism, signaling strong institutional support for this collaborative effort to elevate Jakarta as a globally competitive city. (AT Network)
