ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – A wave of protests in Jakarta from August 28–30, 2025, spiraled into violent riots, leaving behind extensive damage to public infrastructure.
The Jakarta Provincial Government reported that 22 TransJakarta bus stops were vandalized, six of which were completely burned down. The total damage is estimated at IDR 55 billion (USD 3.5 million). Meanwhile, police arrested 1,240 rioters, most of them from West Java and Banten.
22 TransJakarta Bus Stops Damaged, Six Set on Fire
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed that the destruction was not limited to arson but also included vandalism, with shattered glass, broken seats, and graffiti covering the walls of bus stops.
“Out of 22 damaged TransJakarta stops, six were burned and looted, while 16 others were vandalized. In addition, one toll gate was also affected,” Pramono said at City Hall on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Infrastructure Losses Reach IDR 55 Billion
The provincial government detailed the financial losses as follows:
TransJakarta: IDR 41.6 billion
Jakarta MRT: IDR 3.3 billion
CCTV & supporting facilities: IDR 5.5 billion
“In total, the riots caused infrastructure damages worth IDR 55 billion,” Pramono confirmed.
Free Public Transport During Repairs
Despite the severe damage, the Jakarta government assured that all facilities would be repaired by September 8–9, 2025.
To ensure smooth mobility for residents, the city has made TransJakarta and the Jakarta MRT free of charge from September 1 to 8, 2025.
“As of this morning, 14 TransJakarta corridors are already operating, although some obstacles remain. During the repair period, all MRT and TransJakarta services will be free,” Pramono added.
Police Arrest 1,240 Rioters, Mostly from West Java and Banten
Jakarta Police also took decisive action against violent demonstrators. Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Asep Edi Suheri announced that 1,240 individuals had been detained for their involvement in vandalism, looting, and arson.
“Most of those arrested came from West Java and Banten. We had been monitoring their movements and acted decisively to maintain order in the capital,” Asep stated.
He further emphasized that while peaceful demonstrations are protected, destructive actions would face strict law enforcement.
Large-Scale Police Patrols to Secure Jakarta
To restore calm, Polda Metro Jaya deployed 324 joint personnel from the National Police Headquarters and the Jakarta Police for large-scale patrols starting August 31, 2025.
Police spokesperson Comr. Sr. Ade Ary Syam Indradi assured that Jakarta remains under control.
“This large-scale patrol reflects our commitment to ensuring public safety and security for all residents,” he said at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta.
Government and Security Forces Commit to Restoration
With infrastructure losses mounting and over a thousand rioters detained, the Jakarta government, in coordination with the police and military, has pledged swift recovery. Repairs are underway, transport remains free during restoration, and law enforcement is cracking down firmly on those responsible for the violence. (AT Network)
