ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Japanese government fully supports Indonesia’s efforts to achieve food independence, energy independence and the development of downstream industry.

“Japan is committed to leveraging its expertise in these important areas and continuing to further strengthen cooperation and collaboration between the public and private sectors. “This commitment was reaffirmed during the recent Japan-Indonesia Summit,” said Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Masaki Yasushi at the celebration of Japanese Emperor Naruhito’s 65th birthday at the Japanese Embassy in Jakarta, Thursday evening, 20 February 2025.

Masaki said President Prabowo Subianto’s gesture of visiting Japan in April 2024 after the election was proof of Indonesia’s deep appreciation for its relations with Japan.

“An attitude that I find very encouraging,” Masaki continued.

Japan is also committed to continuing to strengthen cooperation with Indonesia in various fields and fostering mutually beneficial relationships that will continue to develop.

Masaki continued that Japan remains Indonesia’s first partner in supporting energy independence in Indonesia, which is one of President Prabowo’s main policy priorities.

Indonesia and Japan are also working together to promote the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) which aims to achieve triple breakthroughs in decarbonization, energy security and economic growth, adding that more than 150 projects have been started in Indonesia under AZEC.

“The most important example is the expansion of the Muara Laboh geothermal power plant,” he said.

The Muara Laboh geothermal power plant is one of 15 geothermal power plant development projects in Indonesia supported by the AZEC cooperation framework.

The Muara Laboh geothermal power plant is operated by PT Supreme Energy Muara Laboh (SEML), a joint venture between Indonesian and Japanese companies.

SEML is currently building Units 2 and 3 of the Muara Laboh geothermal power plant which are targeted to operate in 2027 and 2033 respectively.

Masaki also highlighted another important aspect in Indonesia-Japan relations, namely food and culture, which was then followed by an introduction to Japanese food products at the event while hoping that the food product exhibition could introduce the richness and diversity of regions in Japan.

He also encouraged Indonesian citizens to explore regions in Japan other than Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hokkaido, adding that each region had its own charm and said that exchanges between regional communities in Japan and Indonesia had developed rapidly. (AT Network)
