ASIATODAY.ID, JAYAPURA – The situation in Jayapura City, Papua is tense following mass action which vandalized and burned various facilities in the city.
Papua Regional Police Chief Inspector General Mathius D Fakhiri revealed that the action took place during a procession carrying the body of former Papuan Governor Lukas Enembe in Jayapura, Thursday, December 28 2023.
“The interim report that I received as of 21.00 WIT, there were 14 injured victims. Apart from that, 1 car was burned, 5 vehicles were heavily damaged, 2 buildings were damaged, and 25 shops in the Perumnas area were burned by the mob,” said Inspector General Fakhiri, Thursday evening.
Fakhiri really regrets this incident. The reason is, the perpetrators were part of the crowd who took part in delivering Lukas Enembe’s body.
“Of course this is very unfortunate, children who should respect their parents who are called by God, but actually do things that are not commendable,” said Fakhiri.
He hopes that those delivering Lukas Enembe’s body will respect him as a leader in Papua and respect the grieving family.
“I really hope once again for our children, our brothers and sisters who are grieving. Let’s grieve properly, according to our culture in Papua, not doing things that are destructive, hurt our dignity and worth as Papuan children,” said Fakhiri .
He also emphasized that his party would take firm steps against the masses if they continued to carry out acts of destruction.
“After arriving at the funeral home and the funeral process is complete, we hope that the crowd will no longer carry out anarchistic actions, because we will not be firm. Previously, because we were delivering the body, I would still tolerate it. But tomorrow, don’t try to do anything that could be detrimental other communities!” stressed Fakhiri.
He appealed to migrant residents in Papua not to take retaliatory action.
“I also hope that the community, my brothers and sisters who are immigrants, will not take steps that will end up destroying our atmosphere of harmony in Papua. They can protect their respective areas without taking excessive actions,” concluded Inspector General Fakhiri. (AT Network)
