ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) confiscated 73 boxes of dates from Israel branded “Organic Jumbo Medjool Dates” on Tuesday, March 12 2024.
The confiscation was carried out in an operation carried out at a number of warehouses in the northern port of Klang, Selangor.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Domestic Trade and Living Costs of Malaysia, Armizan Mohd Ali at the Dewan Rakyat Session which was attended online in Kuala Lumpur, Thursday, March 15 2024.
Apart from confiscating the dates, at the same time, a local resident aged around 40 who was believed to be the business owner was also detained and investigated in an operation carried out at a number of warehouses in the northern port of Klang, Selangor.
Armizan also said that action following existing laws would be imposed on any party who provides fake merchandise, whether in terms of type, content or product name.
JKDM carried out the operation after the sale of dates believed to have come from Israel was revealed on social media on Monday, March 11 2024. Based on the results of JKDM’s investigation, it was discovered that the dates were purchased in large quantities together with other organic goods from a country in Europe.
Furthermore, after arriving in Malaysia, the dates are repackaged but the content or nutrition must be stated on the packaging label.
On the date packaging label, there is the name of the product’s country of origin, which apparently comes from Israel, according to JKDM to the media. The total value of the 14.6 kilograms of dates believed to be from Israel that were confiscated by Customs reached 678 Malaysian ringgit (RM).
According to Armizan, such an operation will be carried out again, and people who have information are asked to report it in full via the existing platform.
Apart from that, he said that his party has also carried out price monitoring operations since Tuesday, March 12 2024, not only in Ramadan bazaars but also retailers, supermarkets, traditional markets so that there are no problems and price gouging throughout Ramadan and Eid. Fitri.
He said that in two days he had carried out inspections at 3,099 retailers and found 11 cases, six of which were attempts at profit taking. (ATN/ Newswire)
