ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — A wave of relief swept through Indonesia’s manufacturing sector after Michelin Indonesia, operated by PT Multistrada Arah Sarana (MAS), officially canceled the termination of 285 workers. All affected employees are scheduled to return to work on Monday, November 10, 2025.
The announcement was made by Andi Gani Nena Wea, President of the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI), who confirmed that the company had agreed to revoke the termination letters issued at the end of October.
“This decision marks a breakthrough in resolving the unilateral termination case that had attracted significant public attention,” Andi Gani said in a statement on Friday, November 7, 2025.
Bipartite Negotiations and Efficiency Measures
According to Andi Gani, the company and the Work Unit Executive Board (PUK KEP) of PT Multistrada will soon hold bipartite negotiations to discuss efficiency plans in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement (CLA). The dialogue aims to create a balanced solution between management’s operational needs and workers’ job security.
Strong Legislative Intervention
Andi Gani expressed appreciation to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, and his team for conducting an on-site inspection earlier this week. During the visit, Dasco urged the company to halt the layoff process, emphasizing that no final termination should proceed before due process is completed.
“The swift action by Parliament demonstrates the state’s presence in defending the rights of Indonesian workers. The parliament has shown strong solidarity with the labor movement,” Andi Gani said.
Police and Manpower Ministry Ensure Justice
The National Police’s Labor Affairs Desk and the Ministry of Manpower also moved quickly to address the issue. Their involvement was seen as a critical step in ensuring fairness and upholding labor law compliance.
“This is a collective victory for Indonesian workers. We highly appreciate the swift response from the parliament, police, and the Ministry of Manpower for ensuring justice prevails,” Andi Gani added.
With the layoff cancellation, 285 employees can now resume work with assurance and peace of mind. The resolution highlights how social dialogue, government intervention, and legislative oversight can effectively safeguard labor rights while maintaining industrial harmony.
Michelin Tire Manufacturer Issues Official Clarification
PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk, the Indonesian producer of Michelin tires, has issued an official statement regarding reports of the cancellation of layoffs involving 285 employees.
Igor Zyemit, President Director of PT Multistrada Arah Sarana, emphasized the company’s commitment to treating all employees with respect and maintaining open communication.
He stated that the management continues to engage in constructive dialogue with the labor union to find the best possible solutions to ongoing labor issues.
“We are carefully listening to input from the Workers’ Union representatives. The upcoming bipartite meeting will serve as a concrete reflection of our commitment to open dialogue and respect for a fair process,” Igor said on Friday, November 7, 2025.
As a follow-up, Multistrada confirmed its readiness to revoke the layoff notices previously issued. The company also plans to facilitate training programs for affected employees as part of a joint solution between management and the union.
Michelin Indonesia and Its Contribution
PT Multistrada Arah Sarana is a subsidiary of Michelin, the French tire manufacturer that has operated in Indonesia for the past 14 years. During this period, Michelin—through Multistrada—has made substantial investments and created jobs for more than 5,600 workers in the national tire and rubber manufacturing sector.
Previously, Igor explained that the initial plan to reduce the workforce was an adaptive measure in response to global industry challenges, including the impact of new U.S. tariff policies that have affected the competitiveness of tire exports.
“We have taken various adaptive steps to ensure the well-being of our employees. However, further adjustments are necessary to secure long-term sustainability and maintain Indonesia’s vital role within Michelin’s global network,” he added.
Government Urges Bipartite Dialogue
Responding to the situation, Deputy Minister of Manpower Afriansyah Noor stressed the importance of finding alternative solutions before any company proceeds with layoffs.
“We urge both parties to prioritize bipartite dialogue between management and workers,” he said.
The issue gained national attention after thousands of workers affiliated with the Confederation of All Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPSI) held a mass protest at the Michelin plant in Cikarang, West Java, earlier this week. The demonstration prompted swift action from both management and the government, resulting in the successful cancellation of the planned mass layoffs. (AT Network)
