ASIATODAY.ID, TOKYO – Relations between Indonesia and Japan are now entering a new phase.
This is marked by the commitment of both countries to strengthen collaboration. This was revealed in a meeting between the elected President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto and Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Fumio Kishida, in Tokyo, Japan, Wednesday, April 3 2024.
During the meeting, Prabowo expressed his desire for deeper cooperation in the defense sector between Indonesia and Japan.
“The two countries have built good cooperative relations so far, and ask the Japanese government to work together to achieve stronger relations in the future and increase collaboration in the defense sector,” said Prabowo.
Meanwhile, PM Kishida hopes to deepen bilateral collaboration with Indonesia to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
“This visit was very encouraging. Japan and Indonesia have been close friends for a long time. “I want (Japan and Indonesia) to further enhance cooperation as partners who share basic values and principles,” said Kishida.

Apart from the Japanese PM, Prabowo Subianto also met with Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru.
In this intimate moment, Prabowo expressed his wish to Kihara that in the future the number of cadets from Indonesia would increase.
“I previously met the Japanese Minister of Defense and asked to send cadets from Indonesia. It starts with sending two people. “After that, I asked again to send the number of Indonesian cadets to the Japanese defense school up to four,” said Prabowo.
“I’m currently going to Japan, hoping that there will be an increase in the number of sending more Indonesian cadets in the future,” he continued.
Prabowo assessed that Indonesian Cadets who had studied in Japan had succeeded well and had helped improve the quality of Indonesia’s defense human resources.
The two officials also exchanged views on regional security issues.
On that occasion, Kihara stated that he wanted to maintain and create a free and open Indo-Pacific region based on the supremacy of law together with Indonesia, because Japan and Indonesia are maritime countries.
In this meeting, the two also discussed defense cooperation, both within a bilateral and multilateral framework. (ATN)
