ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT PLN (Persero) through the PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (EPI) Subholding collaborates with a Japanese company, JERA Co. Inc to explore strategic cooperation opportunities in the fields of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to green energy.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation covering the areas of supply, supply chain optimization and LNG infrastructure for the PLN Group, as well as developing the green energy ecosystem in Indonesia, was carried out by the Director of Gas and Fuel at PLN EPI Rakhmad Dewanto together with the Executive Officer, Head of the Platform Business Group JERA Shinsuke Nakayama in Bandung, Monday, February 5 2024.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that this partnership aims to strengthen collaborative relationships with the world’s leading energy companies, especially in implementing primary energy management.
“This is the start of a journey to transform PLN EPI into a world-class primary energy company. Not only for LNG, but also other alternative green energy such as hydrogen. We are aware that hydrogen is the energy of the future,” said Darmawan in a press release, Monday, February 12 2024.
This collaboration focuses on a number of aspects, such as procurement, supply optimization, midstream LNG development, as well as human resource development for commercial aspects and the LNG market. This collaboration also includes developing and optimizing the potential of green or blue ammonia and green or blue hydrogen for fossil fuel replacement projects.
“Green hydrogen is one solution in facing the energy transition. Therefore, the development of green hydrogen is our main focus in efforts to accelerate the energy transition,” said Darmawan.
PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara added that gas plays a role as a substitute for fuel/diesel and coal in the short term and medium term.
In the long term, gas/LNG plays an important role in the energy transition to complement the development of renewable energy.
“To achieve this goal, PLN EPI is developing a portfolio of LNG contracts and midstream LNG infrastructure in order to reduce fuel oil consumption at PLN Group’s power plants,” said Iwan.
Iwan hopes that through this collaboration he can optimize the LNG supply chain, infrastructure development, human resources and green energy utilization technology within the PLN Group.
Executive Officer, Head of the Platform Business Group JERA Shinsuke Nakayama said that JERA and PLN EPI, as companies that were both initially formed to consolidate primary energy by the largest electricity company in their country, have similar characteristics and the same vision and business model.
His party is committed to supporting PLN EPI to develop a reliable primary energy supply chain for Indonesia.
“We know that PLN is currently developing its business and strengthening its energy supply chain, so we are very happy to be able to join and support PLN’s journey to provide a reliable energy supply for Indonesia,” he said.
In addition, Nakayama believes that developing the LNG supply chain will be able to maximize PLN’s energy supply. He also sees that the LNG development and green energy initiatives are part of decarbonization efforts that are in line with the energy transition.
“We hope that this collaboration will be able to create a brighter future for Indonesia and PLN through decarbonization of the energy sector,” he said. (AT Network)
