ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto proceeded with a brief visit to Beijing on Tuesday evening, September 2, 2025, despite ongoing political and social unrest at home.
The trip was made at the official invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend the 80th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The president’s limited delegation departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base around 8:00 p.m. local time. Prabowo is scheduled to return to Indonesia on Wednesday night, September 3, 2025, making the visit less than 24 hours.
Beijing’s Concerns Over Investment Stability in Indonesia
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi explained that the Chinese government strongly urged President Prabowo’s presence, not only for the military parade but also as a diplomatic signal affirming the continuity of strategic cooperation.
According to diplomatic sources, Beijing has been closely monitoring Indonesia’s security situation. Weeks of widespread protests and social unrest have raised concerns over the stability of China’s multibillion-dollar investments, particularly in nickel mining, infrastructure, and energy projects.
“The invitation from the Chinese government was highly important, as they wanted to ensure Indonesia’s commitment to strategic cooperation remains strong despite the turbulence at home,” Prasetyo said in an official statement.
Safeguarding Indonesia–China Strategic Relations
Prabowo’s visit is also viewed as a diplomatic step to ease Beijing’s concerns. China is one of Indonesia’s largest trading partners and investors, playing a central role in projects such as nickel downstreaming, high-speed rail development, and renewable energy initiatives.
“Therefore, to maintain good relations with the Chinese government, the President decided to proceed with the visit and return to Indonesia the following evening,” Prasetyo emphasized.
Meeting with Xi Jinping on the Agenda
In addition to attending the military parade, Prabowo is scheduled to hold direct talks with President Xi Jinping. The meeting is expected to address geopolitical issues and China’s demand for assurances regarding the security of its investments in Indonesia.
“We hope that the bilateral discussions will bring certainty and confidence, not only for Indonesia–China relations but also for the investment climate in our country,” Prasetyo noted.
Domestic Situation Under Close Watch
Before departing, Prabowo ensured he was fully briefed on national developments. Reports from security agencies indicated that conditions were beginning to stabilize following days of mass demonstrations.
“The President continues to monitor the situation closely and has received reports that daily life is gradually returning to normal,” Prasetyo said.
Prabowo also expressed appreciation to the public, security forces, and local governments for their efforts to restore order.
“This has allowed the recent turmoil to be brought under control swiftly,” he added. (AT Network)
