ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ordered the nickel smelter in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, to be strictly audited.
This is to prevent the smelter from exploding, as happened with the PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) smelter operating in the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP).
“The audit must be strict, if possible the checking must be double-in, it must be triple-in so that this incident which has happened once or twice does not happen again,” stressed Jokowi at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Saturday, December 30 2023.
He said that currently the smelter explosion incident in Morowali was still being investigated by the police.
The explosion that occurred at the Tsingshan Group smelter attracted the attention of many parties.
The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, through Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, confirmed that it would impose sanctions on PT ITSS.
From the latest report, this incident has claimed 19 people dead, 29 seriously injured and 11 lightly injured.
Apart from the Tsingsan smelter, a fire also occurred at the smelter belonging to PT Gunbuster Nickel Industri (GNI), in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, Thursday 28 December 2923. The fire was triggered by welding sparks in an area around the factory.
Then the fire immediately grew. Luckily, there were no casualties in this incident. (AT Network)
