ASIATODAY.ID, OSAKA – PT Bumi Mineral Sulawesi (BMS) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sumitomo Corporation at the Indonesia Pavilion during the World Expo Osaka. This strategic agreement outlines plans for BMS to supply nickel matte to the South Korean market through Sumitomo’s global distribution network.
The MoU was signed by BMS Directors Afifuddin Kalla and Faisal Suhaeli, while Sumitomo was represented by Nami Katagiri (General Manager), Akihiko Miyauchi (Team Leader for Nickel), Kotaro Fujita (Assistant Head), and Sandy Purwagandhi of Sumitomo Indonesia.
Also present was Akbar Buchari, Chairman of the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (BPP HIPMI), who expressed his strong support for the collaboration. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s national downstream policy, which promotes value-added processing and aims to boost Indonesia’s export performance.
“This partnership sets an example for Indonesian companies to strengthen the country’s export balance, not only in the mineral sector but also across other strategic sectors such as agriculture,” said Akbar, Monday, June 2, 2025.
The MoU includes several key terms such as sales volume, pricing, delivery methods, and the duration of the agreement. By channeling nickel exports to South Korea in the form of nickel matte, this cooperation is expected to enhance Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain and contribute to sustainable mining exports.
Importantly, BMS has reaffirmed its commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. The company plans to integrate renewable energy sources, including hydropower, to reduce carbon emissions and uphold sustainable development goals.
This agreement marks a significant step in Indonesia’s mineral downstream strategy, where raw materials like nickel are processed domestically before being exported. Such efforts aim to position Indonesia as a key player in the global electric vehicle (EV) battery metals supply chain. (AT Network)
