ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Russia has officially expressed interest in establishing cooperation with Indonesia in the field of space exploration. This initiative marks an expansion of bilateral ties into high-tech and advanced research sectors.
The statement was delivered by Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sergei Tolchenov, during the celebration of Cosmonautics Day at Taman Mataram, Jakarta, on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
In his remarks, Tolchenov emphasized that space exploration could become a significant chapter in the evolving relationship between Russia and Indonesia.
“Space cooperation is now one of the key topics in our bilateral relations. For the first time, the Director General of Russian Corporation Progress—responsible for rocket development and space exploration—has joined us,” Tolchenov said during the event held at the Yuri Gagarin Monument.
He further stated that Russia will initiate talks with Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to explore potential collaboration opportunities.
“We are just beginning this process, but I truly hope Indonesia will eventually become part of the exclusive group of countries that actively engage in space exploration and send their own citizens into space,” he added.
Inspiring Indonesia’s Youth through the Spirit of Yuri Gagarin
The Cosmonautics Day celebration, held annually on April 12, also served as an opportunity to inspire young Indonesians. Ambassador Tolchenov encouraged youth to draw motivation from Yuri Gagarin, the first human to orbit the Earth.
“Gagarin symbolizes bold dreams and optimism. He believed that humans could leave our small planet when few even thought it possible,” said Tolchenov.
“Young people must dare to dream big, think positively, and take action. The world is changing rapidly, and there are countless opportunities in space and technology waiting to be explored,” he added.
Honoring the Legacy of a Space Pioneer
The celebration concluded with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Yuri Gagarin Monument, honoring the legacy of the Soviet cosmonaut who made history as the first human in space.
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft, marking the beginning of the era of human spaceflight and redefining the boundaries of what humanity could achieve. (AT Network)
