ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has just purchased a new very large gas carrier (VLGC), namely Pertamina Gas Caspia and Pertamina Gas Dahlia. This addition to the fleet is to strengthen its position as a top tier LPG carrier in Southeast Asia.
The two new VLGCs will be optimized to transport LPG and petrochemical commodities in the form of propylene and ammonia, and are intended for trade on international routes.
Having a length of around 300 meters and a capacity of 91,000 m3, VLGC Pertamina Gas Caspia and Pertamina Gas Dahlia are produced by one of the world’s largest shipyards, namely Hanhwa Ocean, South Korea.
The launch of the VLGC Pertamina Gas Caspia and Pertamina Gas Dahlia took place at the Hanhwa – Okpo Shipyard, South Korea.
Secretary of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Rabin Indrajad Hattari welcomed the presence of the two newest VLGCs belonging to PIS. It is hoped that this ship will strengthen PIS’s role as the lifeblood of energy distribution in Indonesia as well as make the Indonesian maritime industry proud on the global stage.
“This VLGC is not just a ship, but a testament to international collaboration, technological sophistication, and unwavering commitment to supporting Indonesia’s energy security. “We believe this international collaboration can boost PIS’ capabilities as part of Pertamina, in strengthening energy infrastructure,” said Robin in a press release, Thursday, May 9 2024.
Robin said that these two ships were present at the right moment and played an important role in distributing LPG, a more environmentally friendly energy for industry and households.
On the other hand, PIS CEO Yoki Firnandi said that the addition of two VLGC tanker fleets made PIS one of the largest VLGC ship owners in Southeast Asia, with a total of seven VLGC ships.
“The increasing number of VLGC fleets that are more environmentally friendly also shows PIS’ commitment to supporting the energy transition and sustainable business,” said Yoki.
This new tanker, which is proud of PIS, will also immediately operate on international routes, with its first voyage from Houston, United States, in early May 2024.
Currently, there are 419 VLGC tankers sailing around the world, with an average ship age of 10.08 years. With the addition of two new fleets, PIS now has 7 VLGC tankers with an average age of 3.42 years.
Meanwhile, PIS’s existing VLGCs include Pertamina Gas 1, Pertamina Gas 2, Pertamina Gas Amaryllis, Pertamina Gas Tulip, and Pertamina Gas Bergenia.
“The relatively young average age of PIS VLGC vessels is an advantage in itself, especially in terms of the operational quality of the vessels which are of course more reliable, comply with the latest regulations, use of new technology which can reduce exhaust gas emissions, and are more competitive,” he said. Yoki.
VLGC Pertamina Gas Caspia and Pertamina Gas Dahlia are the largest giant gas tankers in the world that use the latest and environmentally friendly technology. The name Caspia flower symbolizes success and memories, while the Dahlia flower symbolizes happiness and respect.
Pertamina Gas Caspia and Pertamina Gas Dahlia have several advantages, such as the highest load flexibility in their class, up to 39 load combinations, and full anti-piracy accommodation for the safety and comfort of the ship’s crew. In fact, VLGC Pertamina Gas Dahlia is directly managed by PIS and manned by 100% Indonesian crew.
In line with Pertamina’s sustainability commitment, both ships are also equipped with energy saving devices and shaft generators which increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, as well as using environmentally friendly dual fuel and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce acid rain (NOx) pollution.
The total fleet of ships owned by PIS is now 102 units, including very large crude carriers (VLCC), VLGC, Suezmax and other size ships. As many as 60 of these ships operate on international routes. (ATN)
